Most of Uruguay is farmland; much is given over to cattle and sheep. Rice is the country's only significant crop on the world market. Mineral resources may be considerable but, despite optimistic geological surveys, are yet to be exploited. Small quantities of building materials and jewelry-quality agate and amethysts are mined. Hydroelectric power generates 86% of the country's electricity. Its export offsets Uruguay's total dependency on imported oil.
